Whether it’s a sense of community, learning something new, or displaying leadership, clubs can offer up a plethora of beneficial opportunities. Loyola’s new club, By: Women, can offer all that and more.
With a chance to learn more about women, students in this club can learn a sense of leadership and practice their speech abilities by presenting for the club.
The main goal for this establishment it to spark motivation and creativity amongst students and give them an opportunity to learn about things that might not be featured in the typical classroom curriculum.
“Our hope is to spread information and awareness about some underappreciated women,” said Lauren McManus, one of the leaders of the club.
The club meets once a week on Wednesdays for a half hour in Room 111. Each day, the club votes and chooses to present a new woman who has contributed to something in history in any aspect at any time period. Following the main woman, there is then a surprise artist which they learn more about as well. The women can vary from artists to engineers and can have different ways that they have impacted society.
“If it’s painting, if it’s sculpting, if it’s writing, if it’s movies, we cover all of it from artists spanning hundreds of years,” Lauren added.
The lack of women in the school curriculum sparked the idea for this club’s leaders. They observed that most stories are told by men, in the perspective of men, or of a woman written inaccurately by a man. This club is for students who are looking for more information on women in history.
“I at least want there to be a place where people can learn outside of school,” Lauren said.
With many dedicated members, the club spends lots of effort into becoming more involved with the school. At this upcoming Fall Flavor Fest, you can find them selling Shirley Temples and purchase yourself one. After you enjoy your drink, you can partake in the PhotoBooth that they they will be offering.
Fall Flavor Fest is a good opportunity for clubs to put themselves out there and be more well known in the school. Clubs can choose to sell certain food items at their respective booths and can collect tickets from willing students. Not only can students enjoy a fall festival, but they can learn more about the student run clubs that Loyola has to offer.
By: Women has seized the occasion to use this seasonal event as a way to include themselves in the school community. Leah Stein, the second leader of the club explains their motives. “We’re using this as an opportunity to open ourselves to the masses and make ourselves more available to anyone who wants to join us.”
With this inclusivity and passion from the leaders and members, the club encourages people of all backgrounds to partake in learning about these wonderful and forgotten women of the past.
You join by showing up to one of the meetings on Wednesday or sing up on the club’s page in OnCampus.
