Football is flying into the post season undefeated after a huge win against Mt. Carmel. Loyola was Mt. Carmel’s first defeat after a string of 22 wins, with a score of 23-22. Juniors Ryan Fitzgerald and Drew MacPherson were a dynamic duo with 101 receiving yards. They head into their first postseason game this Saturday against Plainfield North ranked #1in state.
Girls swimming and diving also had a massive W this weekend, taking the cake at the MCAC Diving Championships. Senior Greta Kavanaugh beat her own pool record and took 1st place overall. She is headed to the Wisconsin diving team next year. Riley O’Hara ‘24 also took her place on the top of the podium placing 1st in the 200 meter freestyle.
Boys soccer came to a close last weekend after a first round loss in the playoffs against Maine South. Unfortunately, a good season had to come to a quick end, but they hope to go farther next year.
Field hockey also ended this past weekend after losing to Evanston 3-2 in the first round of playoffs. Ingrid Kavanugh ‘24 scored twice, heading a second half comeback. Sophie Malan ‘24 believes the team “left our all on the field, and I don’t think anyone has any regrets about their playing.” Unfortunately, they weren’t quite able to catch up to #5 ETHS in the final moments.
Girls cross country is just beginning their post season, which will end on November 5 at the State Championships. They began their postseason with a strong performance at IHSA Regionals, highlighted by Jane Lynch’s 7th place finish. This weekend all 8 varsity runners qualified to compete at State.
Boys cross country’s successful season came to a surprise end at sectionals. None of the top 8 runners placed, but they are continuing to practice in hopes of a better run next year.
Boys golf had a good season, though not as good as they had hoped. They were 6-2 in weekday matches this year and had two top 3 finishes as a team at invitationals. As a team they advance to sectionals, but lost, ending their season. Drew Southwell 25’ lost in State playoffs as an individual and finished 3rd in conference. Overall they had a very successful season but hope to hit it harder next year.
Girls volleyball has kicked off their post season with some major success. This past weekend they beat Senn and GBN and headed into the sectional final against GBS. They have had a very successful season with a record of 23-14 and were hoping to carry on this hot streak towards State. However, the team dropped a tough game against GBS on Monday.
Loyola sports killed their regular seasons this year and congrats to everyone continuing in postseason!
