Loyola Academy’s Student Council hosted their first Late Night at Loyola for children of Madonna’s Mission on Jan 19 in the West gym aiming to inspire and cultivate a night of games, food, and fun.
Ms. Krein separated all 44 of the children and young adults from Madonna’s Mission into groups by age and grade. This allowed for the night to move concisely and smoothly in the two hours allotted from 5-7pm. The Student Council set up over 20 games in the gym that could appeal to all ages. But, not before serving some delicious treats.
First, the night began with the arrival of all the kids by bus from Madonna’s Mission. In their groups, they were then led into a sanctioned classroom.
Then, fifth and sixth graders were met by four Student Council members who introduced the night’s events. After that other members of the Student Council brought each kid two slices of pizza and a juice box. Once finished, everyone was handed a cookie and brought to the gym.
During dinner, one of the student council members, who happened to be the chair of the Late Night at Loyola event, Mary McQuillen, said “everyone is eating right now and seems to be chatting up a storm…I’m excited.”
Next, the children opened the doors to a game and craft heaven. Some games and crafts included are twister, connect four, bowling, floor hockey, spike ball, egg relay, drawing and more. Everyone ran to the station that interested them the most. Some Student Council members were assigned to a certain activity and helped any kids that wanted to play. Other members followed around certain kids and played with them.
During the activities, another student council member, Amelia Lister, said “I think this is a great opportunity for the kids to have a little fun on their Friday night and to enjoy themselves.”
Lastly, Ms. Krein called everyone over for a group photo. All the kids went back to their original classrooms to grab their coats and jackets. Student Council members made sure to say goodbye to everyone. The Madonna Mission kids left on the bus after a long and adventurous night.
After the festivities concluded, one last student council member, Ali Gergorio, said “this night is important to me because it shows the kids a little bit about the school and we get to meet possible students that could come here.”
