The Chicago Marathon is an annual event that attracts over a million people each year in October. Tens of thousands of athletes line up to run, jog, or walk 26.2 miles. It attracts people from all over the world from some of the greatest racers in the world to a local Chicagoan just looking to go on a lengthy walk. This past marathon was one for the books.
It was a cool day out. Temperatures reached up to the high sixties but didn’t dip below the low sixties. It was partly Cloudy throughout the day as well. A lot of runners would argue it was perfect conditions to run in. Being a past long distance runner I would have to say the conditions could not have been much better.
My mom, a fan of the event, said, “It was a beautiful day to watch the marathon. The trees are full of color and all of the chatter gives it a great atmosphere. Reminds me of all the fun races I have partaken in the past. Makes me want to run one soon. Today I was alright being a fan though.”
People lined up on the sides of roads and watched as runners went by. The race started at Grant Park and then it snaked its way through numerous neighborhoods such as Wrigleyville, Lincoln Park, Old Town, Chinatown, and more. It truly puts the length of 26.2 miles into perspective when you look at a map.
My brother, a participant in the race, told me he had no idea where he was running and didn’t know half of these neighborhoods existed. While he might not be the best at Chicago geography, it still gives you an idea on how long this race is and how it gives you a tour of the city.
He said, “It was something I will always remember for the rest of my life. I can say that I have run a marathon and that is cool. There was a fun environment that made the race special.”
“I don’t know that I would. It was kind of a thing that I just want to be able to say that I did. Now I can, so running it again is not necessarily something on my radar.”
“My only focus was finishing the race, but just getting under 5 hours isn’t too bad. For not being a big time runner at least.”
The race was exciting for all folks who decided to partake in it. Records were broken and fun times were had. The marathon is a staple Chicago event that shouldn’t be leaving anytime soon.
