Last Sunday, the 97th annual Oscar’s occurred. Conan O’Brien, former late night talk show host and writer for NBC’s Saturday Night Live, hosted the highly anticipated event. As it seems every award host is doing nowadays, he made sure to include a few controversial jokes along with the tame ones.
The movie Anora brought home the most wins (five out of six nominations), receiving the highly coveted Best Picture and Best Actress award. Another notable achievement is Sean Baker, Anora’s writer, director, editor, and co-producer, winning four awards for his work on the film. This makes him the first and only person to receive four Oscars for a single film, and ties him with Walt Disney for most Oscars won in a single night.
Karla Sofía Gascón made history as the first transgender woman to be nominated in the Best Actress category, which Mikey Madison ultimately took home for Anora. Adrien Brody won Best Actor, which surprised some, because AI was reportedly used in the movie to alter accents.
Wicked, the musical-turned-movie that became a phenomenon, won Best Costume, although that was their only win. Kieran Culkan won Best Supporting Actor for A Real Pain, and Zoe Saldaña won Best Supporting Actress for Emilia Pérez. Emilia Pérez only took home two out of their 13 nominations, which people speculate is due to leading actress Karla Sofía Gascón’s derogatory tweets that resurfaced in late January.
As for the yellow-suited Timothée Chalamet, Dune: Part Two won Best Sound and Best Visual Effects, but A Complete Unknown won nothing.
The star-studded night was nothing short of interesting.
