The 2020 NBA Finals was an exciting series, but it culminated with a not-so-exciting finish.

There’s no need to worry if you didn’t get a chance to check it out; you are not alone. This year’s NBA Finals saw record low viewership, specifically with Game 3 setting the official record low with a mere 5.94 million viewers. In fact, the Sunday Night Football game that was played simultaneously was watched by almost double the people.

Maybe this is a result of the less exciting environment of the Orlando Bubble, or maybe you refused to watch the Lakers win yet another championship to bump them to a whopping 17 rings. Regardless, here you are now, curious of what happened in the 2020 NBA Finals.

In a best of 7 series, the 1st seed Los Angeles Lakers went into Game 6 with a series lead of 3-2 against the 5th seed Miami Heat. The Heat were huge underdogs going into the series, but counting their riddances in a second consecutive elimination game was out of the question.

The Heat had been without starting point guard and leading scorer Goran Dragic for most of the series due to an ankle injury. In addition, starting center Bam Adebayo had missed Games 2 and 3 with a shoulder injury. Despite being massively short handed, the Heat were able to climb their way back from a 2-0 deficit to make the series 3-2.

This comeback and revival of the Heat team we saw earlier in the playoffs was largely due to the incredible heroics of Jimmy Butler. He played extraordinarily throughout the series and displayed an unmatched amount of effort by barely leaving the game. Butler’s 40 point triple double willed the Heat to their first win in Game 3, but they saw themselves facing an elimination game in Game 6 with both Dragic and Bam finally back.

Although Butler and the Heat had brought some hope and excitement to many fans, the dominant All-Star NBA duo of Lebron James and Anthony Davis was too much to overcome.

The Lakers got off to an early lead in the first quarter, and they refused to let the young Heat squad crawl back. At halftime, Los Angeles was up 64-36. Their defense had been spectacular, and a terrific performance from veteran guard Rajon Rondo pushed them over the top.

LeBron and the Lakers came out of the break with the same energy, quickly diminishing any chance at a comeback by Miami. To few people’s surprise, the Lakers ran away with this one, winning 106-93 in a humdrum end to the season.

This victory can be attributed to Anthony Davis’s impressive, yet ordinary, 19 points and 15 rebounds. The Los Angeles role players stepped up in this win as well, with Kentavious Caldwell-Pope chalking up 17 points and Rajon Rondo’s 8 buckets and 4 dimes. However, it’d be a crime not to mention the Lakers’s leader and league’s “King.”

Even for those who are not Laker fans, it is difficult to not admire LeBron James in this game. He scored 28 points, accompanied by 14 rebounds and 10 assists. This fantastic performance did not deviate from his stat lines of the previous games, causing him to win Finals MVP. This is his 4th championship win, to go along with 4 MVPs.

Congratulations to James and the Lakers in another impressive championship, and hats off to a young, inspiring Miami team as runner ups.
