Marvel Universe Extends to the Eternals

Ken Lam, Writer

As one of the most hyped-up movies coming to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the Eternals movie will be introduced as an immortal alien race created by the Celestials, who were thought to be living on Earth in secret for thousands of years. Although the Celestials are not mentioned in the Marvel movies, this god-like race surprisingly made cameos in multiple films – most notably through the Guardians of the Galaxy

In the latest movie of the series, Peter Quill, or Star-Lord, met his father, who, later on, was revealed to be a Celestial known as Ego. Another mention of the Eternal’s creators appeared as a space station, known as Knowhere, a decapitated head of a Celestial.

With these mentions of the alien race, Marvel Studios are, essentially, leading everyone to this upcoming Eternals solo movie where we will learn more in-depth about the rich history of the heroes and the origins of the MCU’s universe, since it is known that they have lived during its creation.

Firstly, every single being in this universe must belong to one of the three races: the Humans, the Eternals, and the Deviants. For us, we are categorized as the Human race who reside on one planet: Earth. For the other two races, they can be found anywhere in space or even in our habitat, waiting for the right moment to cause chaos.

The Eternals are a species that consists of god-like creatures immune to death and time, making them a terrifying foe in a battle. Lastly, the Ever-Changing beings, the Deviants, are structurally unstable with each new generation having completely different appearances in monstrous ways.

War always occurs between the three species for almost eternity; though, the feud focuses more between the Deviants and the Eternals since they want to fight to gain control over the universe.

Secondly, we must also know the names of our space heroes: Thena, Ikaris, Sersi, Kingo, Ajak, Makkari, Phastos, Sprite, and Gilgamesh. Each of these characters contains a unique background and sets of abilities that gave them their nicknames.

For instance, Ikrais is known as the “all-powerful” Ikaris because of his immense superhuman strength and his mental power to levitate any objects he is lifting. For Ajak, he is viewed as the “wise and spiritual leader” who can communicate with the Celestials and possess other abilities such as accelerated healing factor and flight teleportation.

As the eldest daughter of Zuras, Thena earns her name as the fiercest warrior among the Eternals who possess extreme intelligence in combat and is the heir to her father’s throne in the Olympia, a “headquarters” for the Eternals.

As the fourth member of the group, Sersi serves as a member of the Avengers in Marvel Comics and the only Eternal sorceress who left Olympia to live among the Human race. Also, she possesses the power of telepathy and immortality, posing as a daunting opponent to her enemies in that they should not take her lightly.

Besides Sersi, Kingo Sunen has an interesting life that everyone should know about: he shares a love and passion for Samurai and its traditions, especially with the wish to be portrayed as one. He prefers to fight in the traditional manner of the Samurai rather than completely use his god-like powers to destroy his enemies.

As an Eternal who is commonly confused with the Roman god Mercury, Makkari brings his engineering knowledge taught by his parents – Veron and Mara – to help fix or build any technologies in Olympia. Though Mercury and Makkari are different entities, their commonality is known through their abilities – high-velocity speed allows them to become a formidable opponent towards their enemies.

With Makkari responsible for the repairments of Olympia’s technologies, the inventions of these advanced weapons must be accredited to the tech mastermind himself, Phastos. While making weapons is a life passion for the scientist, his struggles throughout his career had left him questioning the meaning of life, which leads to his feelings completely overtaken by sorrows. Therefore, his current mental state influences him to refuse to participate in war, making him a pacifist.

In every group, there will always be that one person, who loves tricking people – in the case of the Eternals, Sprite is the perfect example. Known to be the youngest of all of the members in her group, she mostly spends time creating absurd and ridiculous illusions for her teammates and humans for centuries under various guises. Although old age is a scary thing that everyone must experience at some point in their lives, Sprite is stuck with being a 12-year old girl for many centuries, who also was continuously being made fun of by the humans. Despite that, her extreme intelligence and illusion manipulation power outweigh her flaws.

As the last Eternal of the group, Gilgamesh serves a crucial role and contributes to the Eternals’ efforts in protecting Earth. While his friends are searching for potential threats in the vast space, Gilgamesh, along with a few other Eternals, decides to stay on Earth and become its protectors from the horrible and evil Deviants to prevent future wars.

With all of the heroes and their rich backgrounds, the Eternals movie will continue to introduce and explore each of the character’s identities as well as the history of the entire MCU universe, which will all take place in Phase 4 – so hang tight there folks, because the ride will be wild!
