Matt Eberflus: The Coach That We Didn’t Know We Needed

Edward Nieman, Writer

Matt Eberflus has been around the game of football his whole life, coaching in 10 different positions with five different teams. It wasn’t until Thurs, Jan  27, that he was handed the keys to the castle becoming a head coach for the first time in his 30 year coaching career when the Bears hired him as their seventeenth franchise head coach.

Throughout the past decade, the Bears have cycled through four different coaches failing to find the one to bring them back to glory. With the drafting of the talented prospect Justin Fields as the new quarterback, and the team dealing draft picks away in order to do that, the Bears organization wanted to be sure that the next head coach is the one.

The Bears made the move to hire Eberflus only two days after hiring Ryan Poles as their new general manager. The hire came with lots of controversy as many Bears fans were in favor of the popular Bills OC Brain Daboll, or the former Dolphins head coach Brain Flores. The hire left many Bears fans wondering “Why Eberflus?”

In Eberflus’ four year stint with the Colts as defensive coordinator, his defense racked up the second most takeaways in the league and allowed the third fewest yards per carry. Eberflus brought the Colts defense from allowing the 30th most points per game (second worst) to the top ten within the four years he spent in Indianapolis. Eberflus also spent two years in Cleveland as a linebackers coach, and worked seven years as the Cowboys’ linebackers coach.

The hiring of Eberflus appears to be a hire for a culture change within the Bears organization more than anything. Eberflus has been praised for his attention to detail, and his leadership.

New York Post sports editor Jeremy Layton wrote on his twitter “Matt Eberflus has always preached intensity, and toughness. He is considered a great leader of men. This hire, combined with Ryan Poles, should make this a much more physical team.”

Former Colts Pro Bowl defensive back Kenny Moore II also had lots of praise for Eberflus telling WGN’s Jarrett Payton “Hard working first and foremost is a word I think of when Coach Flus comes to mind. His passion for the game will be contagious to all the players’ receiving him as a head coach.”

Eberflus commented on his new role saying “I would like to thank Ryan and the McCaskey family for this one-in-a-lifetime opportunity to lead the Chicago Bears, one of the most storied franchises in all of sports in one of the greatest cities in the world. I am truly humbled and honored to be named the head coach and together we will do everything in our power to bring a Super Bowl championship back to Chicago.”

With the Bears having the general manager and head coaching position filled the attention will now turn to who Eberflus will assign the offensive coordinator roles to, which will presumably play a big role in Eberflus’ success as he has had most of his experience on the defensive side of the game.

Evaluating the hire proves to be difficult as Eberflus has had a lack of head coaching experience. Only time will tell of how Eberflus will fare in the new role. Whether Bears fans like it or not Matt Eberflus is the new coach and he will be the next man to try his luck in bringing the Super Bowl shuffle back to Chicago.
