On October 4th, Loyola Academy Varsity football showed their strength as they took down Saint Ignatius to win the Jesuit Cup. Saint Ignatius was coming off a win against Saint Viator the weekend before and a 2-3 record. While the Wolfpack looked to keep their momentum going, the Ramblers pummeled their hope.
The Ramblers had command of the game from the start with an opening kick return by Melo Maldonado that ran it back to the end zone. Although the touch down was called back due to a penalty, the opening play foreshadowed Loyola’s dominance. The Ramblers not only scored on that possession but proceeded to do so for their next three.
Loyola’s versatility across their passing and ground game was particularly noticeable. The first touchdown was scored (again) by a 58 yard run by Melo Maldonado. Next, a 46 yard pass from Quarterback Matthew Lee to Joe Haughey secured a touchdown. Jayden Garrett broke free from the Wolfpack, setting up Maldonado for a third touchdown. The Ramblers kept St. Ignatius off the board in the first half by blocking a field goal attempt in the last minute before half time. A theme throughout the game was the unity of the Ramblers with a strong, cohesive defense. In fact, it wasn’t until the fourth quarter that the Wolfpack finally scored. The final score was 28-7 and a definitive Loyola win.
The Ramblers victory on Senior Day leaves them with a 4-1 record— their only loss to Brother Rice. With captains Gavin King, Liam Walsh, Kai Calcutt and Henry Newton leading the team, the Ramblers look quick, strong and agile. They’ll take on Providence Catholic on the road Friday, October 10.
